Volkswagen Polo Hatchback Overview

The crossover is essentially a beefed up version of the Polo hatchback with additional design elements adding more muscle to the exterior profile. Available with a choice of petrol and diesel fuels, it gets the same units that power Polo hatchback.

Based on Polo, the crossover looks identical to its hatchback sibling barring the additional elements on the exterior like black body cladding and roof rails lending Cross Polo the much needed beefy look. The two models are not too far apart even on the inside with similar styling and layout. Sharing the same mechanicals as Polo, it gets 1.2 litre MPI petrol and 1.5 litre TDI engines with a five-speed manual transmission. Check On Road Price of Polo

The Polo is powered by two engines, a 1,198 cc MPI petrol engine and a 1,498 TDI diesel engine. The diesel engine generates 89 hp of power at 4,200 rpm and 230 Nm of torque from 1,500 rpm to 2,500 rpm while the petrol motor produces 74 hp of power at 5,400 rpm and 110 Nm of torque at 3,750 rpm. Both engine options available in the Volkswagen Cross Polo come with a 5 speed manual transmission. The ride is firm, typical to a Euro-spec car and I couldn’t find any potholes in Germany to comment on how good or bad it can get on the broken roads. But over a few ruts and joints, the suspension seemed pretty silent. The braking is sharper than the outgoing Polo and has a progressive and predictive feel to it. The steering setup has improved as well and weighs up well even at autobahn speeds. I’m guessing the new Polo has the same level of confidence around the twisties too.We will find that out when we have a longer drive in the supermini. I’m not sure when or where that will be, just the way Volkswagen isn’t sure if and when the new Polo will come to India. The MQB platform that gives the new Polo its matured drivetrain and handling, also comes at a price that has Volkswagen India worried. But I hope they crack the problem soon, for the new Polo promises to be a cracker of a supermini that seems poised to surpass benchmarks set by its predecessor.

In this stunning machine, you will find a number of security elements that will make the drive smooth and safe. It comes with dual front airbags that reduces the possibility of injury in case of a collision. Then, there is the anti lock braking system that prevents skidding on slippery roads and during emergency braking. Aside from these, it is available with an engine immobilizer, anti pinch power windows, rear defogger, rear parking sensors, and a few other aspects that enhance the security quotient.

At the end of the day, the Volkswagen Cross Polo is simply a cosmetic change over the regular Polo. It would have been a complete package if the automaker had plonked in a more powerful 1.6 TDI diesel engine to match the robust character of the Cross Polo along with some mechanical changes such as 17-inch wheels, higher ground clearance, etc. Despite no mechanical changes, the Cross Polo is priced around Rs. 70,000/- premium over the Polo Highline TDI. People who are style conscious and like the adventurous tone of the exteriors, the Cross Polo makes some sense. It is an attention seeker and reflects a grown up stance. Then there is the solid German build quality and impressive driving dynamics with a good blend of ride and handling. However in terms of outright value, the Cross Polo provides only a little extra over the regular Polo.
