Hyundai Grand i10 Style

On the design front, the Grand i10 follows in the mould of Hyundai’s Fluidic 2.0 design philosophy. The large, hexagonal shaped grille dominates the front & sets the pace for things to come. It is flanked by a pair of tear-drop shaped headlamps which are neatly swept-back, adding a touch of flourish. The fog-lamps too don’t shy away by being diminutive & are more than adequate for their job. Viewing the Grand i10 in profile, the tire size does appear to be a size smaller in comparison to the rest of the car, but the wheels do fill out the arches nicely.

The design of the alloy wheels are Hyundai-chic, and in line with what we’ve come to expect from the Korean car manufacturer. The proceedings at the back are anchored by the large, single piece bumper which combines well with the wrap-around tail-lamp units to give the rear of the car a contemporary look. This is a car that is going to age rather gracefully, over the years.

Hyundai Grand i10 Space

People familiar with the car will find the similar ambiance inside. The carmaker has retained the upmarket cabin with the two-tone dashboard and steering remaining the same as before. However, they do get subtle changes. The key attention will be definitely the new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with the interface similar to that of sibling Elantra sedan. And this is not a plain jane unit but powered by Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and even MirrorLink. The navigation apps of your smartphone can be easily integrated into the system. The infotainment also provides visuals from the rear camera. On the other hand, the lower variants get the 5-inch touchscreen unit which supports USB, Bluetooth, and Aux-in connectivity. The output from the 4-speakers is good enough for the car of this stature.

The seats have now become more comfortable and supportive. They now get the right amount of cushioning to keep you tucked in. You get ample amount of legroom at the rear. The height adjustable driver seat and the tiltable steering wheel set you in the preferred driving position. Coming to the feature list, the carmaker this time has installed automatic climate control which adds more to the comfort factor. And the rear ac vents are just icing on the cake, especially in the torching summer weathers.

Further, the feature list continues to impress us with the addition of voice recognition button added to the steering wheel. Other than that, you get the same comfort and convenience including power outlets at front and rear, cooled glovebox, one-touch power windows, push-start stop button and electrically adjustable ORVM. Talking about space, as the name (grand) suggests, it’s utterly convenient for 5 passengers. The car offers best in segment 256L of boot space.

Hyundai Grand i10 Performance

Hyundai introduced the car in both petrol and diesel engine options. The tried and tested petrol engine – 1.2-litre VTVT engine comes from the i10 and i20 models. This engine used to do its duty on the i10 and is still available with the bigger i20 model. The 4-cylinder engine has 16 valves and has a displacement of 1197 cc. Working on full load, the engine produces a maximum of 83 bhp at 6000 rpm and maximum torque of 114 Nm at 4000 rpm. The petrol powered engine is smooth and frugal and does the job very nicely.

The diesel versions carry the newly developed second generation U2 CRDi technology. With a displacement of 1186cc, the new engine has 3-cylinder with 12 valves. The diesel mill generates a maximum of 74bhp at 4000rpm and the torque figure peaks at 190 Nm spread across a wide range of 1750-2250 rpm. Hyundai bolts a 5-speed manual transmission with the Grand i10 on both petrol and diesel models. The Korean giant in order to offer a wide range to the customers also fits an automatic gearbox with the Grand i10.

Hyundai Grand i10 is a complete package and with the moderate power it comes with, which is better than most of the models in the segment, Hyundai has tuned the engine of the Grand i10 in a very good way. The Hyundai Grand i10 promises to offer an impressive fuel efficiency of 24 kmpl with the diesel engine, which is among the best if not the best in the segment. And with an average fuel efficiency of 18.9 kmpl with the 1.2 petrol Kappa2 engine its at par with other hatches in this segment. The real world conditions might bring down the mileage by about 15-30%, but even after driving on moderate speeds, the fuel efficiency remains commendable.

Hyundai Grand i10 Riding

The ride quality is pliant & the car handles bumps rather maturely. She’s a little out of her element when faced with quick directional changes, but make no mistake. She’ll pull through whatever you throw at her, just not in the most graceful manner, that’s all. The steering feedback sadly is still the typical Hyundai legacy affair & no matter how much time I spend behind the wheel, I still haven’t gotten used to it. The glaring lack of feedback is disappointing & takes away a lot from an otherwise solid city runabout package.

Hyundai Grand i10 Safety

The Hyundai Grand i10 has a special anti-corrosive steel ring structure to improve rigidity for occupant safety. Additional safety features like ABS and co-driver airbags are available in the higher variants while all versions are offered with driver airbag and immobiliser.

Hyundai Grand i10 Bottomline

Hyundai Grand i10 is a very affordable car and by all means is the best choice in its segment. The Grand i10 has a long list of features, which look very good and inviting on paper. The base model somehow misses out on few key things like ABS and passenger airbag. This mid-sized hatchback looks very pleasing to the eyes and comparatively looks better than most cars on the road. The Hyundai Grand i10 packs almost every feature needed in a car in a compact package. With the segment-first features, like the integrated memory, Hyundai has surely attracted many tech-savvy buyers towards the new model.

The elegant-looking diamond-cut alloys make the car even more appealing. Important safety features, like the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and passenger front airbag, are missing in the standard list, and they come only as an option with higher variants. Hyundai has surely made a point on including all the features in the vehicle but not all are available with the Era or the Magna model. Even with the missing features, the Hyundai Grand i10 is a good choice in the segment and the sales figure of the car just puts concrete to our thoughts.
